Saturday 16 December 2000, Law Base

This morning Ewan and I assembled all our 'retro cargo' for the next helicopter. This included collapsed cardboard boxes, tins which were separated into aluminium and steel, burnable rubbish and plastic bags of our solid human waste which will also be incinerated at Davis. Our liquid waste (including that from ourselves), goes into a 'grey-water' drum and will also be sent out to Davis Station for appropriate disposal.

Every day is a new experience for me, in fact for all of us. In the mid afternoon the Russians arrived to repair one of their big tracked vehicles which we have named 'Landroverskis' The machine had broken down on the road to their Progress 1 Station site and airfield on the Polar Plateau. With much hammer wielding, the right track and front driving wheel were re-attached and they were grateful for assistance given by Jim and myself. The recycling programme is running well now and in addition, we are being careful where we walk. Formed tracks are adhered to wherever possible and if no lichens or mosses are present on hard rock, we stick to these areas. Soft ground is avoided as footsteps and wheel track imprints remain for some time

While Arthur cooked tea, Jim and I had our first game of Euchre and I was beaten 10 games to two. Had a can of beer and some biscuits with cheese and gherkin and some sun-dried tomato made by Jim's wife Trish. Arthur's meal was excellent and consisted of ravioli filled with cheese and spinach. Work wise we had another useful day with the surveyors and Ewan out in the field and Jim and I continuing with preparations for our field work which should get underway immediately after New Year.
