David L. Harrowfield's Diary
Friday 5 January 2001, Law BaseSince my last message, we had a helicopter arrive with a few visitors and technicians. One of the vistors was Colin Lee Hong, an electrician who is scheduled to winter at Davis. Colin repaired one of our electric leads with the result that we now have lights in the mess hut. He is also trained as an anaethetist. We made lunch and found that Leigh Hornsby one of our pilots, enjoys Chinese 'green tea', which is very refreshing. I studied up my notes for the sampling of soil and water sites. We were delighted to hear of the success with obtaining a mud core at the Amery Ice Shelf. The party camped here has accomplished the first drilling though the ice and into the seabed. Saturday 6th January 2001Some time was spent this morning boxing up all our waste and other rubbish ready to be flown out. With the arrival of a helicopter, it was possible to get rid of all our material with the result that the camp is tidier and hygenic. By lunchtime I had completed a sketch map of our immediate environment, in preparation for obtaining soil and water samples which I managed to collect by the end of the day. I am going to a good deal of trouble with this work and between each sample, sterile gloves are worn and everything has to be carefully cleaned between samples. We sat down to a fine bacon and egg pie made by Jim for tea, and I enjoyed the lovely still evening, with the face of the Dalk Glacier magnificently reflected in the calm sea. Two visitors arrived today - carpenter John Travis and surveyor Adrian Corvino. They will be assisting us for a few days and also having a break from their normal work at Davis Station. ![]() Law Base mess hut with Mark Tell, Supervising Communications Technical Officer visiting from Davis Station.
