Peter worked as an electronics engineer on the Australian Antarctic Division's Automatic Penguin Monitoring System (APMS) during the summer of 2000/2001 . He performed maintenance work and implemented changes, improvements and extensions to the APMS and other systems for tracking and gathering data on Adelie penguins. In addition to his engineering work, Peter also assisted the biologists in tagging Adelie penguins and other animal work as well. Most of this work was done away from the Station at Bechervaise Island which lies about 2 km off the coast from Mawson.

Peter is married with 3 children, aged 7, 3 and 1. His last baby (a boy) was born on Friday 29th December 2000 whilst Peter was in Antarctica.

Peter's diary begins:

"The story so far...

Our hero, the intrepid Kernebone, once more sets out for the great white land. What follows is the epic story; tales of the high seas, of whales, penguins, seals, ice, water, ice, penguins, ice, (did I mention ice?)

I am attempting to keep a bit a diary again this year, and will email them out to you. If you want to get on (or off) the list, then send me an email and let me know. I am also sending these to some friends (Annette and Nick) who I met down South last year, and who are setting up a web site with some Antarctic material including pictures and what have you."
