11:30am: First ice berg spotted
An ice berg just
like the first one seen. It might even be it!
Another quiet day, and a few people have asked about ship life so
here goes...
For most of us, the ship is our commuting vessel, and we have no particular
duties on board. The most basic ship program is; breakfast at 8:30,
lunch at 11:30, dinner at 5:30, and sleep in between. The most common
question asked after breakfast on day one was "Now what do we do?" Unless
you are working on the boat, there is not a lot to do. As you know,
there is the video room, the gym and the bar. Apart from that, people
do a lot of sitting around drinking tea/coffee, playing cards or scrabble,
chatting or reading.
I have been mildly sea "unwell" for the first half of the trip, and
am just now catching up on things and people. I am starting to get to
know a few of the people I will be working with at Mawson. I also have
access to the electronics lab, and am trying to get a bit more advanced
with some of my work before getting to station. Desk work is difficult
on the ship as it is constantly rocking and noisy.
