11:45am: My first good whale sighting. 4 minke whales. No pictures.
They were quick, and only a few people on the bridge to see them.

1:30am: Circled an ice berg raising about $300 for Camp Quality. The
crew on watch wouldn't do it unless those of us on the bridge put some
money down. It is a tradition on the Aurora that people try to raise
money for Camp Quality. People do crazy things like shave their heads
or dye their hair if enough people put enough money in to the C.Q. fund.
Profits from the bar also go to C.Q., as do any funds raised from events
like quiz nights etc.

9am: Reached the ice edge. This ice is harder and thicker than the
ice we have been travelling through, and the boat cannot make very fast
progress.
2pm: Flown to Mawson by Sikorsky S76 helicopter. Met old friends from
last year, most of whom are heading back on this voyage after having
spent the winter here, and the summer crew, some from last year, and
some new faces.
