10/2/01 - Mawson Station
We are now into the second day of quite a respectable blizzard. Wind
speeds yesterday were constantly up at 60 knots, with gusts up in
the mid 70's. Visibility yesterday was about 10m for most of the day.
Today there is a bit less snow blowing, and the vis. has gone up to
about 200m. Still pretty bleak. The winds have been high since last
Sunday when we started the chick tagging at Bechervaise. With the
bad weather coming, we requested boat assistance to bring us back
to Mawson. There was only a small window of a few hours on Wednesday
when the wind was less than 30 knots, and the work boat could be put
into the water. It has been much nicer here in the high winds, but
we are not able to get to Verner to do the tagging work there.
Philip!! I've
finally seen another pic. That's my boy.
