About FrostBytes

In FrostBytes, Pene and Gina give personal accounts of two Antarctic winters. Gina wintered at Mawson in 1985 and Pene in 1990 - both are atmospheric physicists.

In 1990 Pene was the only woman in a group of 24 winterers. The correspondence with Gina provided female companionship and support. Gina was working in Alaska, and the contrasts between life in these two polar environments is seen in their letters. When Alaska is bathing in summer life and energy, Antarctica is in the depths of winter.

. . . In Frost Bytes, Pene and Gina were watching conjugate aurorae from opposite poles. Connected by these beautiful, intangible events as well as via a series of invisible satellite and phone links we were able to maintain an emotional bond through our letters, our connection extended from the big picture of the physical universe to the intimate connections of the heart.

FROSTBYTES, a great read
