Peter Kinsella's Antarctic Voyage Diary

Peter's home page

Peter went on the following commercial trip to Antarctica early in 2001. Here is his diary of the voyage:

ANTARCTIC TRIP, JANUARY 21st 2001 to FEBRUARY 14th 2001 aboard the Russian Icebreaker Kapitan Khlebnikov, crew 60, passengers 96.

"The Great Explorers Trip: Visit the huts of Douglas Mawson, Ernest Shackleton and Robert Falcon Scott. Including Macquarie Island and Campbell Islands."

Antarctica is a Continent which is 50% the size of North America and larger than Europe and Australia

Other than the Peninsula which is just off South America's Tierra del Fuego, the continent is roughly circular, with a diameter of about 4500 km and an area of about 14.2 million sq km. Ice covers 99.6% of Antarctica and is 4.775 km thick in places. It contains 90% of the worlds Ice - 30 million cubic km - which contains 70% of the worlds fresh water.
